OK - but when does it start to make a difference?
This article is all about companies that have 1000s of links. What if you only have a dozen?
"Add URL" sites don't link back
I would appreciate your views on this please: I’m always on the lookout for camping holiday links and like everyone else I see loads sites with of “add url” or “add site” etc, so I very often add my site details in the hope the other party links back. More often than not I look at my links page after a month or 6 weeks and find that maybe 1 out of 40 has linked back. Is there a more reliable method of collecting reciprocal links? And, why do site owners not bother to get in touch when they are obviously in need of reciprocals as well? Is it a scam where they just hope people will forget having linked to them?

I think the most important and difficult aspect of link building is getting very high quality themed and directly related links. I like the content of this site and the methodologies that they use. In fact I will enquire right after I finish writing this.

I am not sure about these wordprojects that you see. Selling words that are linked to your website. It is just buying links and Google WILL punish you. Spend your money on a good keyworded domain name instead.

It would appear that correct linking must be the way forward from the amount of replies from obviously knowledgable people.

Building links should be done manually, and ethically, however when talking about buying link, to get listed in one of the most respected directories on the internet you have to pay I hear you ask. My answer to that is "you pay for a directory inclusion, and not for the link" so it should not be frouned upon by the search engines.
Only Quality links will work
Agree with you, but i am not recommending to go for buying links from directory as far as link juice is concern. We can suggest to go for paid listing by putting nofollow attribute.

Many seo comapny provide one way link building and only the one way link building is helpfull for everywebsits. serarch engine not give the weightage to reciprocal links.
3 way links
One way links are sometimes hard to get, so people are using 3 way links a lot more. A links to B. B links to C. C links to A. No site has a reciprocal link, but everyone has a link.
If you have multiple sites sitting on the same hosting server, and you give reciprocal links between your sites, Google gives them no real value. If you must link between your own sites, try to make them 3 way or better yet, have at least 2 hosting accounts so you get 2 IP addresses and then do a 4 way link. A(IP1) links to B(IP2). B(IP2) links to C(IP1). C(IP1) links to D(IP2). D(IP2) links to A(IP1).
One-Way linkbuilding
One-way link building is far better for SEO purposes that is why companies offer it as a service. it is an important part of SEO, but not the only thing. It is important not to only think about Links but also all the other factors like on-site, H1 headings, internal linking.

Linking certainly still matters, and the proper linking form matters even more!
Having invested considerable time to search out high authority sites take just a bit more time and trouble to maximize your efforts. When possible, and especially when invited, make use of anchors with contextual links.
Obtaining a PR4 link with relevant keywords as anchor text is MUCH more valuable for ranking than just a signature link to an un-related username.

Thanks for this one, web design guy. I'd been reading through all the comments thinking the same thing...where's the mention of internal linking structures. While building external links is obviously an important factor, don't overlook your own back yard. If you've not set up an extensive, yet easy to navigate internal linking structure, you're shooting yourself in the foot before you've even left the front door.

All good stuff but don't focus too much on 'dofollow' links. My experience has shown that 'nofollow' links count towards your rankings too (to some extent) so don't ignore the opportunities they represent.
