Being left is oh so right

For a store in San Francisco, to be right is simply just not, er, right; no, this is a business where it certainly pays to be left.

Lefty's San Francisco: The Left Hand Store was recently featured in a CNN Money article entitled 'Where lefties are always right: Lefty's San Francisco profits by selling to an overlooked market niche'.

It would be reasonable to think that anyone looking to open a store of such uniqueness would possess a particular passion for, or relation to, the product that they were selling.

Of some surprise then is the fact that Ms Majua is a righty and only came across the idea of a shop selling left-handed produce when she stumbled upon an advertisement for a left-handed writing implement called a Yoropen.

The Yoropen, shaped a little like a grasshopper, is designed in such a way so as to allow left-handed writers the ability to read what they are penning without smudging it.

Having opened a plethora of themed outlets all over the country since 1986 - including Las Vegas and Disney World – Ms Majua, who it would be fair to label a serial retailer, saw the commercial worth of the unusual pen.

She said: "At first I thought it was pretty creepy-looking. Then I thought it might just be weird enough to sell."

And sell it has. Indeed, under Ms Majua's capable (left and right) hands, Lefty's has been doing well since it opened in March 2008.

Appropriately, the store is located on Pier 39, where 31 years ago Left Hand World pioneered the world of left-handed retail.

Although that particular store closed a decade after opening, Lefty's is a fitting tribute to an industry that it is fair to say will never be ubiquitous.

That said, Ms Majua is doing her best to mainstream the concept as much as is possible and secure an established product line.

She said: "[Before Lefty's] no one had developed a product line. I knew I had to fill the store, but I also wanted the stuff to look good together. I'm fascinated by merchandising."

With the store doing well and Ms Majua 'ticking off' another niche retail business in her distinctive career, it would be fair to say that her decision to open Lefty's was nothing short of right.
