Businesses urged to step up engagement with 'web-savvy consumers'

Businesses need to turn to the internet if they are to reach the growing demographic of Web 2.0-savvy consumers.

That is according to the findings of the newly-published IBM Global Business Services report, which found that usage of social networking sites among consumers grew by 60 per cent over the past 12 months.

At the same time, the proportion of internet users accessing the web on the go, that is through mobile phones and other such devices, increased from 15 per cent to 41 per cent over the same period.

As such, businesses need to start enhancing their online presence and even start engaging consumers on social networking sites if they are to stay relevant and profitable, Bill Batino, of IBM Global Business Services stated.

He added that consumers are becoming increasingly willing to share information and receive marketing initiatives "under the right conditions".

Earlier this month, small business coach Jody Gabourie became the latest expert to advise companies to look into using blogs to enhance their professional standing and marketing capabilities.
