Channel Five sets out new internet strategy

British broadcaster Channel Five has confirmed that it has finalised plans to outsource its online operations as it looks to keep up with the growing demands of web users.

Just weeks after the channel launched its own digital media group in 2008, it put forward plans to bring in a third-party specialist to deal with its web hosting and management issues, Computing has reported.

Under this new initiative, responsibility for all its web content, which includes individual sites for popular shows such as Neighbours, Fifth Gear and The Gadget Show, will be taken on by just one company.

According to Computing.co.uk, Five technology manager Francois Chabat explained: "This is part of our wider plan to ramp up our rich media offering as we had not invested in that area as much as our competitors had until recently.

"With a single provider, we have much better performance online, less administration and a single set of quality standards, which means we know what to expect and how to react in case of any issues."

At the same time, the broadcaster has revealed that it plans to concentrate on increasing revenues generated from its online advertising sector.
