Having a good eye for decent fittings and furnishings is always a bonus when you are redecorating your place.
Sometimes, however, it is nice to get a bit of help along the way - particularly if you are the sort of shopper who likes to get things that are a little more unique than the items you find in most stores (and consequently in most other peoples' houses).
As such, ThisIsNotIkea.com may be the perfect website for a lot of people who are looking for something a little bit different.
The Los Angeles Times has thrown the spotlight on this online store and explained how the company has managed to do so well.
In an article entitled Vintage-furniture scavengers turn trash into treasure online, the newspaper shows how the site has utilised what some people might consider to be old junk and turn it into a profitable enterprise.
Run by Alexis Hadjopulos and Tom Whitman, the website of this antiques business was set up last year.
According to Mr Hadjopulos, the crux of the company is that, for those who are in search of something a bit different, they have it on offer.
He said: "For what IKEA is, it's great. But we're something else."
The pair will frequent yard sales and estate sales during the weekends in search of items that the can add to the store's collection.
They have plenty of interesting vintage things, as well as beautiful antique furniture and an array of quirky items.
"We don't buy your grandmother's antiques," Mr Whitman added. "Unless your grandma was really cool."
And it seems to be paying off. As noted by the LA Times, the company is expected to make revenues of $200,000 in its first year.
