The credit crunch is proving good news for the internet, as new research reveals young professionals are increasingly using social networking sites.

Over the past few months, there has been a rise in the number of young people spending money to find new friends online to go and have fun with.

Friends and events network CitySocialising.com has seen a 222 per cent rise in its membership since January 2008.

Young professionals in London, Bristol and Manchester are leading the way, topping the table in terms of the number of people making concerted efforts to find friends online.

Commenting, Sanchita Saha of CitySocialising.com, said: "January is historically a good period for us as a popular resolution amongst our time-poor target market is to make more of an effort to meet new people.

"But, with the credit crunch in full swing, we expected to see a major downturn in new members compared to the same period last year."

She said the company was extremely pleased with the rise and said it was good for people to have good friends around them – particularly in these tough economic times.
