Businesses in the UK are overly concerned with stopping employees using the internet, new figures have suggested.
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has revealed that firms are not capitalising on the benefits technology can bring as they are too worried about policing the internet.
Just under two thirds of managers indicated that they view the internet as "a massive timewaster", the research, in association with Ordnance Survey, found.
The same amount, 65 per cent, also choose to block sites on the internet, while 18 per cent impose curfews on the amount of time employees are allowed to be spend online.
Jo Causon, director of marketing and corporate affairs at the CMI, stated: "Younger managers are growing up with much greater familiarity of technology.
"Quite clearly, organisations need to harness the comfort levels these individuals have with internet-based resources, because failure to do so will lead to frustration and the loss of top talent at best, or worse, an open door for competitors to build advantage through a better equipped and enabled workforce."
A separate report called Learning at Work: Evolution or Revolution found that half of all directors now use online videos for skills development.
