The internet is to be used directly to promote environmental awareness if a new domain name idea is secured.
Dot Eco is planning to operate the .eco domain, which would help to spread the word of its green ideas through the unique internet alteration.
James Murray, editor of BusinessGreen.com, said that it is "a great idea".
"Dot Eco appears to be a prime example of what ICANN [Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers] is trying to achieve with the diversification of domain names," he said.
"It will allow an emerging green and clean tech sector to promote itself more effectively and help further highlight environmental issues."
Alliance for Climate Protection and its founder former US vice-president Al Gore is supporting the idea.
"This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole," he commented.
The expansion of generic top level domain names on a major scale was recently discussed by ICANN at a meeting in Mexico City.
