Software experts are pioneering a new program that automatically filters out spam and nonsense from comments made online.
The StupidFilter project is designed to filter out idiotic remarks left by thoughtless internet users on respectable websites.
Most leading sites currently read individual comments made by visitors and censor any offensive or nonsensical remarks, but this new development could make website administration less arduous.
The team behind StupidFilter describe their brainchild as a "spam filter for stupidity in comments" and point to the so-called 'Eternal September' 14 years ago when serious sites started to become plagued with idiotic users.
"In the beginning, the internet was a place where you could communicate intelligently with similarly erudite people," the software writers told the Guardian.
"Then, Eternal September hit and we were lost in the noise. The advent of user-drive web content has further compounded the problem, straining our tolerance to breaking point," they continued.
StupidFilter could have numerous applications, not least in the ecommerce industry. Its developers are aiming to release their product in December this year.
