Organisations operating more than 2,500 PCs could save thousands of pounds every year by implementing power management schemes on their machines.
That is according to Gartner, which estimated that such enterprises can expect to save in the region £29,100 a year.
The research company estimated that turning off and unplugging machines out of office hours could save an additional £4,400; however, it warned that doing so could hinder employee productivity as updates will need to be carried out during work.
Federica Troni, principal analyst at Gartner, said: "Much attention on power consumption has focused on the data centre, but PC power consumption in an organisation can also be significant, especially given steadily rising electricity prices."
She urged IT companies to recognise that PC power management programs can deliver larges savings, adding that life cycle management tools can help with the implementation of such policies.
Earlier this month, the company predicted that enterprise mobile phones will come to replace desktop phones in North America by 2011.
