Social media is increasingly being embraced by a number of US businesses, it has been claimed.

New Media Intelligence has said that Twitter is being used by companies that want to try and develop a better relationship with their clients, such as Dell.

Managing director Tim Houghton gave Dell as an example, saying that the technology company uses Twitter "quite heavily".

Mr Houghton also noted that small UK businesses are starting to utilise the benefits of Twitter.

He said that Twitter could be used to boost communication in a similar way to "corporate blogs".

"They use it very much as a customer feedback tool," Mr Houghton observed. "If they've been launching something or they want to speak to their customer base they will use Twitter to do so I think."

Mr Hougton made his comments following a report from Reuters which suggested that Twitter is planning to create enhanced features for some of its users.
