Happiness for Australian men is surfing the internet, a new survey has found.

According to the 2008 Australian Happiness Index more than half of male respondents said they found happiness when surfing the internet, using social networking sites or playing online games, according to Reuters.

The same activities, however, meant happiness for just 39 per cent of women.

The survey found that women enjoyed playing with children or pets and family meals more entertaining than sex or the internet.

Surprisingly just 30 per cent of women were happiest while shopping for clothes and other fashion items.

However, in comparison, only 14 per cent of men were content while shopping.

Karen Phillips, managing director of the Leading Edge, which conducted the survey, said: "This index gives insight into the way we tick, with the results being useful to Australian businesses who want to better communicate with their customers," Reuters reports.

However, another study has found that regular hugging is the secret for married couples to maintain happiness.

The survey, of 4,000 couples, found that couples who hugged four times a day led happy marriages, reports the Daily Mail.
