The internet has been described as a lifeline for businesses looking for ways to prosper in the current economic climate.

A new survey from Easynet Connect has found that 45 per cent of small businesses believe that the web is "an important tool" that can help them survive the recession, with 20 per cent calling it the "most important tool".

In addition, more than half of small firms believe the internet can but them on the same level as larger companies, while three quarters of businesses are growing their profiles online.

Chris Stening, managing director of Easynet Connect stated: "The critical difference between now and the recession of the early 90s is the internet, which could easily be the most important tool in helping small businesses through the current downturn.

"The internet has meant that businesses are much better equipped this time around."
