The huge growth in online video means that the line between computers and televisions is blurring.

That's according to Ashely Highfield, managing director at UK Microsoft, who has suggested that increasingly "the PC is becoming a TV screen".

Mr Highfield, speaking at the Intellect Annual Regent Conference 2009, added: "The UK leads the world in terms of the reach of online television, in terms of the amount of strings per user.

"That is a great advantage for the UK technology industry in terms of writers, broadcasters, anyone involved in this – the verification that they are actually being watched."

According to Hitwise, between February 2007 and March 2008, internet traffic to online video websites increased by 178 per cent.

Youtube leads the way as the most popular video sharing website, as well as being the eight most visited website on the internet overall.

Also doing well was the BBC iPlayer, which came in third in the most visited video sites.
