Software monolith Microsoft might dominate the IT industry at present, but its days at the top could be numbers, a technology expert has claimed.

According to Richard Holway, chairman of research company TechMarketView, Microsoft will find its ascendancy corroded by new technology and business models in the future.

Speaking at the Intellect Annual Regent Conference 2009, Mr Holway suggested: "That particular giant is not going to have the power in the future that it has done."

He cited statistics highlighting increases in sales of netbooks - many of which come without Microsoft software installed - as evidence of a predicted power shift in operating system and application software markets.

The annual conference took place at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London earlier this month.

Delegates from across the technology industry discussed a range of issues currently affecting the sector, including the global economic uncertainty that is currently plaguing most markets.
