More than 19 out of 20 internet connections in the UK are now via broadband, figures from the Office for National Statistics have shown.

In December 2008, broadband accounted for 95.1 per cent of internet connections, which was up from the 94.1 per cent total recorded in September of the same year.

According to PC Advisor, this correlates with the steady increase in the number of broadband connections which have been occurring since 2001, reflecting the popularity of the technology.

There are also a higher proportion of high-speed connections, as 59.6 per cent of broadband connections had a speed greater than 2Mbps in December last year.

Dial-up connections are continuing to steadily decrease, with numbers falling by 51.7 per cent in the 12 months leading up to December 2008.

Analysis Mason recently claimed that it is going to be difficult to monetise high-speed broadband in the UK.
