The process for registration of brand names on the internet is fair, industry experts have said.
This comes in the wake of statistics showing a huge increase in cybersquatting in 2008.
Figures from MarkMonitor have revealed that there was an 18 per cent rise in the activity, which involves "brandjackers" leveraging trademarks to improve their own search engine optimisation.
However, Matt Mansell, chief executive of Domainmonster.com, noted that there is a fair process to recover brand names and continue growth on the web,
"Every single registry that launches has a dispute resolution process that is very effective and works very well," he said.
"Whilst there may be an 18 per cent rise in cybersquatting, there is a very distinct process for recovering that name. I think the process is fair and if somebody is the rightful owner of the name it deals with that."
MarkMonitor's research found that phishing is the top brand-related issue on the internet.
