Having a website is practically non-negotiable for the majority of firms these days, particularly retailers.

This is something that has not gone unnoticed by The Hundreds, a Los Angeles-based fashion outlet.

The street-wear retailer was started six years ago by law students Bobby Kim and Ben Shenassafar, who began by designing t shirts in class. It now sells t shirts, shoes, caps, hooded sweatshirts and other items.

Aside from the LA store, there is now also a store in San Francisco and a highly successful blog.

In an article entitled The Hundreds wants to sell but not sell out, the Los Angeles Times throws the spotlight on the company's success.

As noted by the newspaper, The Hundreds' blog is something that has proven to be very successful, especially with younger customers.

Started in 2003 when the clothing line was launched, it is updated daily and now has 1.8 million monthly page views, according to figures from traffic-measuring site Quantcast.com.

Talking to the LA Times about the blog, Mr Kim said: "We said, let's have it so the kids interact with us and they feel as much a part of it as we do.

"People thought I was just corny and it was pretty nerdy to have a blog you wrote on everyday."

Despite the potential threat to the firm's street cred, the blog has worked wonders.

Mr Shenassafar told the newspaper that, partly thanks to the blog, sales have increased considerably and in 2008 The Hundreds made $4.8 million in sales. This is up from $1.8 million in the previous year and much higher than the $900,000 worth of sales recorded in 2006.

However, as explained in the article by the Los Angeles Times, the company is now facing something of a dilemma.

There is certainly room for expansion, but will this detract from the original ideals behind The Hundreds?

According to Mr Kim, this may not be a problem.

"If we can use it to our advantage - to where the man is not using us, but we're using him to gain exposure and to make it look like we're beating Goliath - I'm going to do it," he said.
