The using of online video websites in the UK has increased by 40 per cent in just a year.

Hitwise revealed late last week that one in every 35 internet visits in February was now to a video website, up from one in every 50 on a year previous.

BBC iPlayer has now moved up to the 22nd most popular website in the UK, with traffic up 152.1 per cent.

Robin Goad, director of research for Hitwise UK, said: "Video is now a key component of the online landscape in the UK.

"Three years ago Youtube was still in its infancy and slow connections meant that online video wasn't a viable option for many internet users."

Mr Goad added that since that time, UK internet traffic to various video sites has increased "37-fold".

Music searches in particular have had a big impact on video sites, with Youtube being the second most visited destination for such requests after Wikipedia.
