Former Disney chief executive Michael Eisner has announced that his investment firm is to launch a new broadcast studio aimed solely at producing web media.
Named Vuguru, the studio financed by Tornante will both create and distribute videos specially made for downloading and transferring onto mobile phones and personal digital assistants.
The move marks the ever-growing importance of web video and it appears that the medium could come to resemble that of the mp3 music downloads.
At first, videos of 80 to 90 seconds in length will be produced by the company as broadcaster attempt to adapt their material to the new format. Later on, it hopes to make videos ranging from five to seven minutes in length.
"The entire concept here is content is king," Mr Eisner told Reuters. "What will drive traffic is interest in the subject matter."
The first release will be a mystery programme entitled Prom Queen, which will be available both from Tornanate's
website and YouTube.
