Google launches Talk webpage gadget

Google has released a new gadget as part of its Google Talk programme that allows users to embed the instant messaging service into their own web pages.

This is the first time the service has been made available in such a way; it was first available as a standard software download but the latest move is an attempt to spread use of the web tool through bloggers and web users who create their own websites.

Moreover, customers can add it to their own web page or indeed their personalised Google homepage, which users can customise peppering it with gadgets and third party information sources.

Although Google has attempted to spread its talk service through Gmail, its 'search not sort' email system, the latest move seeks to increase uptake even further and catch up on rivals AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo, who currently lead the field of instant messaging.

With the Google Talk gadget device, users can share text messages with each other and if they have downloaded the Talk application, can host voice conversations.

The service also allows users to share videos from YouTube and pictures from the search engine giant's Picasa photo manager.
