Yahoo has launched a new search service in the US for mobile phone users that aims to deliver an instantly relevant set of local links.
The service, which is to be rolled out globally later this year, aims to capitalise on the inherently local nature of the internet searches that mobiles already perform.
Marco Boerrries, Yahoo Connected Life business unit spokesman, told Reuters every phone with a browser would have the new search service.
He added: "We are delivering the results consumers want with just one search, not a list of web links."
The company claims that Yahoo's mobile phone service, OneSearch, is different from most computers which simply provide a raw set of links.
Instead, Yahoo believes its service gives actual information such as news headlines, business listings and links to other sites.
Mike McGuire, Gartner analyst, said: "This is not a knock on Google per se, but Yahoo has taken that a very specific starting point - your town or neighbourhood.
"The context of many mobile phone searches is going to be very local. That starting point is key, like road traffic in my area."
