Google has launched a new program that aims to help website owners increase hits, sales, sign-ups and downloads.

Aimed at small and large businesses alike the Google Website Optimizer enables marketers to try out ideas for web page design such as varying headlines, promotional copywriting and headlines.

At present, Google Website Optimizer is a beta application and it is integrated with the Google AdWords program and is free to companies that advertise through AdWords.

The tool has been available in the US since October and has already helped marketers boost sales.

Deborah Krier, marketing manager of Dale and Thomas Popcorn, said: "Using Website Optimizer enables us to approach our website like a living lab, where we can test and play and constantly figure out how to improve the site.

"Website Optimizer is a powerful tool that allows us to understand our users better, leading to increased conversions and increased business success."

Such tools are becoming vital for ecommerce businesses looking to maximise the monetary potential of the internet as the Web 2.0 revolution gets in full swing with services such as blogging and social networking, which are both powered by user generated content and make use of expert linking.
