Technology cannot be solely relied upon to prevent attacks of cyber crime, it has been claimed.
According to Sophos, there also needs to be a degree of human judgement when it comes to protecting computers and software.
Senior technology consultant Graham Cluley pointed out that a combination of both tactics is likely to further reduce the chances of an attack.
He commented: "I don't think there's any kind of magic bullet really that solves the computer crime problem. Essentially the computer crime problem is a human problem rather than a technical one."
Mr Cluley stressed that it was also important for people to be educated about the sorts of things that can cause problems when downloaded, but noted that technology can prove helpful when problems arise.
"You need to defend yourself with some proper security that looks after you all the times that you forget to act sensibly," he added.
