For some businesses, securing an office on the 31st floor of a centrally-located skyscraper in one of the world's busiest commercial hubs isn't such a priority.

While a number of businesses require the added connectivity that such areas offer, there are certain firms that are quite happy with more open, less connected spaces, both for product-related reasons and the personal preferences of the director.

A recent example of such a company appeared in a CNN Money article entitled 'Peak performance: Billings, Mont: If you don't mind a little isolation, Billings combines gorgeous scenery with low taxes'.

The piece focuses on a company called Beartooth Mapping (or MyTopo.com if referring to the website), a firm that sells bespoke topographic maps and other geographic products.

MyTopo.com will most likely have received a rise in the level of traffic as a result of the link placed in the CNN article and beneficial online PR that it will have generated.

Company owner Kevin Toohill was raised in the suburbs of Chicago and, as such, is no born-and-bred country bumpkin.

He has located largely as a result of his own desires, but you have to wonder how far his company would have got had it remained in the Windy City - a company that sells outdoorsy goods and maps, will probably best serve itself by locating in an outdoorsy location.

And Billings in Montana, where Beartooth Mapping is located, is certainly that.

Mr Toohill told the news provider: "If big mountains and recreational activities are what you like, Billings is your place.

"We are two hours from Yellowstone National Park. There's the best fly-fishing in the country. We've got horseback riding trails and white-water rafting. That's what keeps us here."

Rand's Custom Hats, a family business that sells Western-style hats to cowboys and film stars is another Billings company that is probably better suited to its location. Demand for such a product in Mr Toohill's home city of Chicago would probably fall short of what Billings can offer.

As is so widely said, it's all about location, location, location.
