Stay in control and keep on learning

There will no doubt be a number of people out there of the opinion that once you've reached the top, that's it.

With nothing but employees beneath you, you've done all the hard work and you know all there is to know - no longer the student, now the teacher.

Well, sometimes, it's better to keep on learning - even if there's no one at your company in a more senior position.

The benefits of acquiring more business knowledge were recently documented in a New York Times article entitled 'You're the Boss: What is the Boss's Job Description?'

For Jennifer Walzer, whose company Backup My Info! was the focus of the article, the benefits have turned out to be even greater than initially anticipated, with her company having no doubt benefitted from the online PR boost it will have received.

As for the content of the article itself, that's all about a collection of established businessmen and businesswomen going to something that could perhaps be described as 'chief executive school'.

Ms Walzer attended the recent Entrepreneurs' Organization-M.I.T Entrepreneurial Masters Program, which only takes on 60 people per year, each of who have to own a business with revenue of at least $1 million.

The idea behind the program is to give the students the tools and information required to take their companies to the next level.

The first task for the new class, was to evaluate their role and, more specifically, think about their weaknesses - something most chief executives are probably not used to doing.

"If you were fired as chief executive and a new [one] were brought in to take over your position, what would they do that you aren't doing? What are you doing that they would stop doing? And why aren't you doing things that way?" were the initial questions posed.

Humility would be an essential factor in this class's development.

Ms Walzer considered the questions carefully and came up with a number of things - things that up until that point, she had not contemplated.

Graduation from the course isn't until 2011 and there are sure to be many more lessons learned before then.

For this initial class however, development has certainly been made, with Ms Walzer now in the process of actually writing up her job description.

Such an embracement of the lessons at hand and a willingness to not sit on her chief executive laurels, could yet see Backup My Info! develop along with her.
