The top performing websites of last year have been revealed and fashion and government organisations have fared well.

The Hitwise UK Online Performance Awards found that retail firms prospered through E-Commerce in 2008, with 17.7 per cent growth for internet visits to shopping sites.

Also, fashion retailers now make up one in every ten visits to online retail stores, with Next leading the way and Topshop in third.

Businesses in the food trade have also benefited from heightened interest through the web, with this sector enjoying a 32.8 per cent increase in overall hits.

In addition, businesses keen to find out the latest changes the government has made to help boost the economy have contributed to a 13.3 per cent increase in traffic to government websites between February 2008 and last month.

Overall, Facebook scooped the title of most searched for brand, while other social networking sites, bebo and MySpace, were in second and sixth place respectively.
