Mexican phone company Telmex has launched a new platform called Prodigy Media, which allows viewers to watch programmes from Fox News, TV UNAM, two major Mexican networks and download videos as the transfer of video content to the web gathers pace, reports Reuters.
But the arrangement will be only be free of charge in the short-term to gain a sizeable audience, after which time it will be turned into a profit-making business venture.
Telmex is aiming to integrate mobile phone, television and web-based technologies, with a view to offering consumers one comprehensive package in the future.
With Google's purchase of YouTube for $1.65 billion last year and the focus of many media groups on their web presence, it is clear that the future of television and the internet is likely to coalesce further.
Major TV networks Fox, HBO, CBS and ABC have all invested heavily in video content for their websites over the last 12 months.
