Computer owners who are worried about their machines being hacked into should rely on technological measures for protection.

These measures should also be complemented with the use of "common sense", Kaspersky Lab has said.

Senior technology consultant David Emms said that many people are still not aware of the various precautions they should be taking in order to protect their computers.

He pointed out that several small steps can be extremely useful, such as regularly changing passwords, altering the default security settings and making sure that protection software is up-to-date.

Mr Emms commented: "Partly it's a technological issue and the answer there is to make sure you've got protection software…and the second [issue] is more what you would call in the real world common sense."

The 2009 Security Threat Report from Sophos, published last December, revealed that US websites host more malware than in any other country.
