Virgin Media has claimed in an interview with the BBC that it will offer superfast broadband before BT.
In the past, BT has claimed that new fibre networks that allow faster broadband speeds will be up and running by 2012.
However, Neil Berkett, Virgin Media's chief executive, said that they would likely offer faster speeds soon.
"If BT were to meet the time frame they have suggested - of finishing by 2012 - I would see us as having much, much faster upstream speed, running at a minimum of 100Mbps downstream and possibly more," he said.
According to the BBC, BT will deploy some of its new fibre networks rolled out to 29 exchanges within nine to twelve months.
Areas of Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, London, Manchester and Glasgow will all be the first to benefit from the BT roll out.
Speeds of up to 40Mbps and possibly 60Mbps will be available in around 500,000 homes.
