Wikipedia users have come to the website's rescue, raising more than £4 million in an online fundraising campaign.

Site creator Jimmy Wales appealed for financial support on the site to ensure that it could survive without having to take the advertising or subscription route.

In the eight days since the appeal at the end of last month, more than 50,000 people joined together to raise more than $2 million.

The money was needed to upgrade the site's software and increase its bandwidth, the Telegraph reports.

Mr Wales posted a thank you to all the contributors on the site this week, saying: "You have proven that Wikipedia matters to you and that you support our mission: to bring free knowledge to the planet, free of charge and free of advertising."

Wikipedia was created in 2001 and over the years has grown to be ranked among the world's top ten most visited websites.

It is no stranger to fundraising to keep it up-and-running because of its principle of no advertising.

Last March the Alfred P Sloan Foundation donated $3 million to be given out to Wikipedia in annual instalments.
